Реч "арханђео" потиче од грчке αρχαγγελος (арцхангелос), што значи главни анђео, превод хебрејског רב-מלאך (РАВ-мал'акх). Потиче од грчке Арцхо, што значи да је први у рангу или власти; и ангелос што значи гласника или изасланика. Реч се користи само два пута у Новом завету: 1 Солуњанима 4:16 и Јуда 1: 9. Само Архангели Габријел и Мајкл се име помиње у Новом завету.
