A form of rotary actuator in which the fluid acts on a piston on which a rack of gear teeth is cut. As the piston moves, it rotates a pinion gear which is mated with the teeth cut in the rack.
Industry:Aviation
A form of rotary, internal combustion engine. Instead of using cylinders and moving pistons, the Wankel engine uses a rounded, triangular-shaped rotor, with sliding seals that form the combustion space inside an oblong circular chamber. Expanding gases from the burning fuel-air mixture press against the rotor and rotate it and the drive shaft geared to it.
Industry:Aviation
A form of rubber filled with millions of tiny air bubbles. These bubbles were beaten into the latex before it was vulcanized.
Industry:Aviation
A form of self-tapping screw that has no screwdriver slot nor recess in its head. Drivescrews are used to attach nameplates to an engine crankcase and to plug holes in a tubular steel structure through which preservative oil has been pumped. Drivescrews are installed by driving them in place with a hammer.
Industry:Aviation
A form of series-wound electric motor that operates equally well on alternating current or direct current. A universal motor has a commutator on its armature, and armature current is fed into the commutator through brushes.
Industry:Aviation
A form of sheet-metal bending tool in which a long, straight male die whose bottom edge has the correct bend radius is pressed down onto a sheet of metal placed over a female die containing a long V-shaped groove. The male die is usually forced down by energy stored in a large flywheel.
Industry:Aviation
A form of shoe brake that uses the weight of the aircraft to wedge the shoes tightly against the drum when the aircraft is rolling either forward or backward.
Industry:Aviation
A form of soft and fluffy carbon. Carbon black is produced by burning certain types of gas with a flame that contains insufficient oxygen for complete combustion.
Carbon black is used in the manufacture of aircraft tires and as a pigment for some types of paint.
Industry:Aviation
A form of spring which resists a force trying to compress it, or squeeze it together. Open coil springs are often used as compression springs.
Industry:Aviation
A form of standard cell used for measuring voltage by comparison. A Daniell cell produces an accurate voltage of 1.1 volts with a copper electrode in a copper sulfate solution and a zinc electrode in a zinc sulfate solution. The two solutions are separated by a porous membrane.
