relieve
The real or apparent projection of three dimensional figures from a flat background. In sculpture, the term is used for figures raised physically above the background, protruding from it to varying degrees. Low relief (or “bas-relief”) would mean the figures scarcely project beyond the surface, as on a coin; in high relief, the figures might be almost free standing. In relief printing, the print is made using the surface of a block in relief, the parts which are to appear white being cut away.
